Animal insecticide and parasite treatments contain a variety of chemical ingredients
and you should be aware of what you are subjecting your pet to and the likely side
effects.
Here we list various treatments with links to the information describing
the constituents.
There are many treatments available, some only through vets or pharmacies,
and they all have various levels of organophosphates or pyrethroids - often the
same product under a different name - and we suggest that you "GOOGLE" the constituents
or look them up on the
wikipedia
web site. Forwarned is forearmed.
Remember that no matter how bad the chemical treatments sound the diseases they
help to prevent may actually be worse!
Organophosphates are nasty and seem to be commonly used in the Algarve for agricultural
purposes and if you suspect that your pet has been poisoned (unexpected shivering,
shaking and nervousness) get veterinary treatment IMMEDIATELY |
Scalibor Collar
(Dogs)
Note: Their datasheet is the only place we have seen that the collar should not
be used with any other
organophosphate
based insecticide even though, as far as we can tell, the only listed ingredient,
deltamethrin, is a
pyrethroid.
Their datasheet also mentions that you should not use this product if you are allergic
to
triphenyl phosphate
but this constituent is not included on their product label - presumably because
they use it as a plasticiser and someone has not considered it to be an active ingredient.
According to the
US Department of Labour this can cause
muscle weakness and paralysis in animals and another
pollution information site
indicates that this is a suspected neurotoxicant! Maybe this is also the masked
link associated with the organophosphate issue mentioned above. |
